Venice, California

We concluded our road trip to Southern California with a workweek spent in Venice. It’s usually overrun with tourists and beachgoers, but Venice without the crowds was actually quite charming, not least because we stayed in an amazing converted garage airbnb, which made for a perfect lush jungle working retreat.

Breakfast from Gjiusta, the bakery spinoff of Gjelina.

Working station for me and for Alex.

Plenty of neighborhood walks.

And around lunchtime, we roll up the garage door for a beautiful indoor-outdoor situation.

Lunch from Sugarfish.

Abbot Kinney, the retail stretch of Venice.

Donuts from Blue Star.

Working and lounging life.

All restaurants were takeout-only while we visited, but that didn’t stop us from trying out the best takeout of our lives with this double decker kaiseki box from n/naka. Stellar food and artful presentation. Except the basque cheesecake from their partner baker, which was inexplicably runny. We baked it more and it was better.

And of course, the Venice Canals. Much more lush than the Italian version.

And a walk down to Venice Beach.

Sunset at Santa Monica.

In love with this cute and mean shark logo for Great White.

Chompchompchomp.

And finally, swinging through LA on our way out. Kobe mural… hard to believe his death was also part of 2020.

A stop by Jeni’s in Los Feliz, picked up Porto’s from Burbank, and we were back to the Bay with some In N Out on the way.
